The beginning: how I became a field guide

Some dreams just won't let go of you. They keep knocking, even when you think you've already decided on the “reasonable” path. For me, that dream was: Africa. Nature. Wilderness. And one day to drive through the savannah as a guide myself.

But let's start from the beginning.

I studied biology, with a focus on biodiversity and ecosystem functions – because I've always wanted to know how nature works. After that, I worked as an environmental manager for a while. A job with meaning, no question. But somehow something was missing.

So one day I said to myself: if not now, then when?

I traveled to South Africa and completed a 55-day field guide course at Ecotraining – in the middle of the African bush. There, you not only learn to recognize and interpret animals, but also how to safely maneuver a 4x4 vehicle through the wilderness, read tracks, understand the big (and small) picture – and, above all, how to be present. In the moment. In the now.

And that's exactly what happened to me.

Between the lion's roar in the night, the starry sky and the instructive hours with incredibly experienced trainers, I realized: this is it. I want more of it.

That's why I've decided to go back. For a whole year. I want to dive in even deeper, learn even more – and then take the plunge into self-employment. As a guide. As a nature mediator. As someone who helps others see this world with new eyes.

And because I love the things I do, I will accompany this journey with my camera. Photography has always been my creative outlet – now it will become the second common thread in my adventure. I want to capture what moves, fascinates and inspires me. Not perfect, not styled – but real.

This blog is the prelude. I will give insights, tell stories, show photos – and take you with me on my journey. For those who know me: It's great to have you here. For those who don't know me yet: Welcome to my little piece of wilderness.

See you soon – somewhere between termite mounds and animal tracks!
